A SUMMER SHIRT INSPIRED BY HAWAII’S “TERMITE PALACE” GROUNDS CREW
History: From 1926 through 1976, a wooden stadium stood at the corner of King and Isenberg Streets in Honolulu, Hawaii. It was small, with a capacity of only about 25,000. It lacked infrastructure. It was called “The Termite Palace” for its infestation. Yet, like so many ballparks of past eras, it had a simple charm. Broadcaster Al Michaels compared it to a little bit of Brooklyn in the tropics, with an old ramshackle Ebbets Field kind of flavor.
Inspired by the ballpark grounds crew and their working class attitude, the short sleeve work shirt was a staple of the mid-20th-century wardrobe thanks to its simple good looks, utility, and versatility. Ours is cut in a utilitarian yet soft cotton/linen blend twill, features dual chest pockets, and detailed with sustainable corozo buttons. We finished this one with “Hawaii” lettering above the left chest pocket and the name of the Islanders' home field, the “Termite Palace” on the back.
